The history of Goodwood

In 1905 a racecourse was constructed and the area was named Goodwood Racecourse, after the Goodwood Racecourse in England.

However, after only one race meeting, the course was abandoned.

With the convenience of the railway station, built in the same year, the area rapidly developed in spite of the failed racecourse and in 1938 achieved municipality status.

The Goodwood neighbourhood

Goodwood is situated in the Northern Suburbs. At a glance this may seem like just another suburb, but on closer inspection you are sure to find something for everyone to enjoy.

It is located approximately 17km from the Cape Town city centre via the N2 highway, and only 10km from Cape Town International Airport via the M7, M12 and Halt road, respectively.

The fact that most activities in Goodwood can be found under one roof, assures that maximum fun can be had by the whole family with minimum travel time required. There’s a variety of bars and restaurants that caters to all styles and tastes. Whether you prefer family dining, fast food or fine dining you are sure to find it here. Make sure to check the events calendar for live music events, exhibitions and stage shows. Goodwood may not be the most obvious choice for a fun day out but as most locals know, it is the perfect suburb when it comes to indoor entertainment, especially during the wet, Cape Town winters.
